The focus is to support and explore decision making counseling for unplanned pregnancies. Should adoption be the option chosen, the Pregnancy Counselor will assist the birth parent throughout the adoption process with all services needed, including during the court process. Fully open adoption is supported at Hands Across The Water. Pregnancy Counselor will provide support and services for as long as birth parents are in need. Job Description: Pursuant to the Enbridge oil spill in Marshall, Michigan (see Enbridge field study at www.waterhealtheducator.com), a community leader in Battle Creek, Michigan is looking for student interns/practicum students for an in-depth health study involving vulnerable populations suffering from the adverse health effects from the oil spill. They are hoping to find students to conduct health surveys (both physical and mental health), socio and economic census of the affected area and to build upon current research. The Michigan health study of the oil spill (also available on the WHE website) plans to have no followup or proactive health programs, due to funding constraints, so the populations most affected (mainly mobile home communities and small farmers) are looking for students to help to write both newspaper and academic articles, worth with reporters and health clinics in the area, and possibly start a free clinic. This is entirely unpaid, including any travel expenses, but we strongly urge prospective interns to seek any possible grant or funding from local philanthropic organizations or their university. Students are being recruited from both the Virginia and Michigan areas and will have various experts in the field to work with during their commitment. Time commitments can be as little as one week to an entire semester.

Job Description: Visions in Action is an international development organization based in Washington DC with programs in Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa and Liberia. Its mission is to achieve social justice in the developing world through community based approaches to grassroots development. VIA has worked in education, food security and public health in Liberia since 2002. VIA has implemented the Emergency Education Program in Maryland County, Liberia since July 2011. VIA is seeking a highly qualified educator experienced in Emergency Education and Child Protection in a refugee context to provide overall direction and guidance to education interventions in Maryland County under a program supported by UNICEF. Job Description: Summary: General management of the Visions in Action U.S. Office, including volunteer recruitment and support, program development on new program initiatives in Africa, and U.S. office management and administration. Management: Recruit and manage U.S. office interns in the areas of program development (2), administration, finance and website/IT. Check in with each intern daily, giving feedback and assuring goals are being met. Manage Classic and Supported Volunteer programs overseas. Support overseas country coordinators and volunteers on an ongoing basis, primarily through email. Assure that information on new Classic volunteers is quickly sent to coordinators, and that coordinators are following the program timeline in volunteer placement and orientation preparation. Assure that all Classic volunteers are placed one month before the start of orientation overseas. Work with Country Directors managing funded development programs to ascertain the need for Supported Volunteers. Recruit, screen and place these volunteers on programs in close collaboration with Country Directors. Assure that volunteers file their quarterly reports and final evaluation as given on the international management schedule. Read and respond briefly to those reports to maintain constant feedback with the field. Monitor and evaluate volunteer progress and development impact in conjunction with overseas coordinators. Suggest program improvements as needed. Respond to correspondence from overseas staff and volunteers on a timely basis. Respond to requests from overseas volunteers and alumni via email or fax when the matter is routine. Refer issues requiring the clarification of Visions in Action's policy to the Director. Assure that staff and paid consultants complete monthly timesheets, that they are correct, and that they are approved by the Director before payment is issued. Track staff leave days. Finances: Create and monitor Classic Volunteer program budgets in South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda each six month cycle based on incoming volunteer levels with help from country coordinators and SVs, and submit to Director for approval. Assure that country coordinators submit program reports, financial reports, cash count and bank statements monthly as required, including utilizing the required Excel sheets. Assure that vouchers and receipts are mailed and received in the U.S. office quarterly. Calculate and pay bills on time. Monitor cash flow in the U.S. checking account and the U.S. office petty cash. Enter U.S. office expenses into QuickBooks. Assure that QuickBooks entries are correct. Implement the Visions Financial System as specified.Prepare for the annual audit by assuring all bills, checks, timesheets, vouchers and receipts from all the countries are in order and can be easily found by the auditors. Recruitment: Work to sustain and hopefully increase Classic Volunteer recruitment worldwide through use of mailings, email, internet, paid ads, career fairs, conferences, presentations and any other reasonable means. Oversee and recruit the U.S. office interns from the web and local campuses, assigning and delegating duties as needed. Have interns frequently attend career fairs, forums and other presentations aimed at increasing recruitment in D.C. and out of town as needed. Coordinate and give presentations to relevant classes at campuses and organizations in the D.C. area. Interview Classic and Supported Volunteer candidates for overseas programs. Accept or reject candidates interviewed for the volunteer program. Respond to their questions before leaving for overseas. Participate in occasional volunteer recruitment trips, utilizing alumni and interns to maximize outreach whenever possible. Program Development: Work with the Director, U.S. interns and country coordinators on creating funded humanitarian development programs as needed, including proposal writing and donor liaison, in the fields of food security, education and HIV/AIDS. House Management: Collect monthly rent payments from the tenants in the building, depositing them into the House Account. Manage house repairs by consulting Director if it is major, calling the appropriate service person as needed, or fixing it yourself if minor. Calculate the water bill for the downstairs unit once each quarter, and collect payment from tenants. Pay bills monthly. External Relations: Represent Visions in Action to government donors as needed, including USAID, USDA and the U.S. State Department. Follow up and inform the Director on key issues, including the timely submission of program proposals and reports.
