William (Bill) L. Vanderwill, Field Educator / LEO Lecturer III

BioSketch Mr. Vanderwill joined the Office of Field Instruction in the School of Social Work in July 2005 as a field educator/lecturer/field liaison. His primary areas of interest are gerontology, care management, chemical dependency, health care, mental health, and professional consultation and training. He works with students across all methods and concentrations.

Bill has worked as a social worker, community organizer, supervisor, and field instructor in a variety of human service agencies, including the Community Crisis Center, Starfish Youth Services, Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, Family Service of Detroit, Salvation Army Harbor Light Center, Hegira Programs, Arcadia Health Care, and Northville Counseling Center. He has also maintained a private practice in counseling and professional consultation since 1999.

Bill has been the director of Addiction Studies at Madonna University and was a member of the teaching faculty from 1982 to 2005. He has taught social work, gerontology, psychology, sociology, and addiction studies courses. Additionally, Bill was a faculty member at Wayne State University in the School of Social Work, College of Lifelong Learning, College of Pharmacy, and the Department of Mortuary Science from 1998 to 2005. During his tenure at Wayne State University, he also worked for the Field Placement Office as a placement assistant and faculty advisor. Bill has also been an instructor at Henry Ford Community College, Marygrove College, and the University of Michigan-Dearborn. He has pursued doctoral studies in the areas of counseling and sociology at Wayne State University.

Bill has also been involved in the social work community as a workshop presenter and consultant from 1982 to the present. He has designed training programs for organizations throughout Michigan, including NASW--Michigan Chapter SPICE series, American Red Cross, Michigan Board of Education, American Cancer Society, and Michigan State University. He is a licensed marriage and family counselor and a board-certified diplomate in clinical social work.
