Laura Nitzberg has been at the University of Michigan since 1986, when she was recruited to run the Marital and Family Therapy Clinic in the Department of Psychiatry as well as to teach at the University of Michigan's School of Social Work. Since that time, she has been a regular, senior adjunct faculty member of the Social Work School, teaching classes on interpersonal practice with families, mental health practice, and couples treatment. She teaches and supervises clinical work to psychiatric residents and other disciplines in the health system. She has also had considerable experience treating couples and families, and her specialties include treating dual career couples and people with depression. More recently, she has played a significant role in the development of support groups and family programs for the new Depression Center. She received a promotion in July 2006 and is now assuming a leadership position in the Social Work Department of the Health System and the Department of Psychiatry. Her new title is Psychiatry Social Work Division Lead. She is social work manager for in-patient adult and child psychiatry units, consultation-liaison social work, and addiction treatment services.

Laura graduated in 1973 from Barnard College in New York City and received her master's in social work from Columbia University in New York City in 1975. She received advanced clinical training in family therapy from the Ackerman Institute in New York. Her first 11 years of professional work were in New York in private practice and at the Payne Whitney Clinic of New York Hospital.
