Michael Woodford?s research addresses issues of social exclusion of marginalized groups and promoting their full inclusion through social policies and programs. His current research investigates heterosexism and interventions that seek to promote social inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people. Woodford examines the effects of explicit and subtle discrimination on targeted individuals and bystanders, predictors of heterosexist attitudes, support for LGBTQ civil rights, s, and allyship as a means to confront heterosexism.

Woodford also conducts research that promotes HIV/AIDS prevention among men who have sex with men and other vulnerable groups. Earlier work examined the use of public participation initiatives as mechanisms to develop social policies that enhance the wellbeing of marginalized groups.
