Kristine Siefert joined the faculty of the School of Social Work in 1979. She has served as associate dean for academic affairs, assistant dean for research, and director of the Research Center on Poverty, Risk, and Mental Health. She has also served as a faculty associate of numerous interdisciplinary research and training programs and centers throughout the University. Her research focuses on identifying modifiable social, behavioral, and environmental determinants of health and mental health in women and children, with an emphasis on addressing socioeconomic and racial/ethnic health disparities. Recent studies have examined the etiology of racial/ethnic disparities in pregnancy outcome, the contributions of poverty and discrimination to maternal depression, and the impact of household food insufficiency on physical and mental health. Her research has been supported by numerous federal agencies and foundations. In 2003, she was named one of the most influential researchers in social work. She has served as a consultant for numerous governmental, human services, and professional organizations and in an editorial capacity or as a reviewer for 25 scientific and professional journals. In 2007 she was appointed the Edith S. Gomberg Collegiate Professor of Social Work. She is also a recipient of the University's Harold R. Johnson Diversity Service Award.
