Douglas Davies, MSW, PhD, is a child and adolescent therapist and an infant mental health specialist who was trained at the Child Development Project at the University of Michigan (Selma Fraiberg, director). He has been in practice since 1979 and held clinical and supervisory positions in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Outpatient and Infant Psychiatry Programs in the Department of Psychiatry at U-M. He was also lecturer in Psychiatry at the U-M Medical School. He has taught IP courses at the School of Social Work for 20 years. Since retiring as clinical/practice associate professor in 2005, he continues to teach part-time.
In 2005 he was elected to the National Academies of Practice as a "Distinguished Social Work Practitioner" and endorsed as a "Distinguished Infant Mental Health Mentor" by the Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health. In 2007 he received the Selma Fraiberg Award from the Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health.
His clinical research interests are in intervention with toddlers and parents, treatment of trauma in young children, therapy of young cancer survivors, and childcare consultation. His 2004 book Child Development: A Practitioner's Guide, second edition (Guilford Press), describes how to apply child development theory to clinical practice.
His current practice focuses on supervision and clinical training. For the past several years, he has been supervising childcare consultants for the State of Michigan Child Care Expulsion Prevention Program, as well as leading reflective supervision groups for supervisors and clinicians through the Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health.
