Armand Lauffer joined the School of Social Work as an associate professor in 1968 and was promoted to professor of social work in 1973. He retired as professor emeritus in 2001. Professor Lauffer's current interests include fundraising and resource allocation in the nonprofit sector, community self-help, and ethnic identity as a source of social activism. He currently lives in Jerusalem, Israel. His recent work led to the design of an international MBA concentration in nonprofit management and Jewish communal leadership for Israel?s Interdisciplinary Center. His research and training activities with the Joint Distribution Committee have focused on the reemergence of Jewish identity in the former Soviet Union, community self-help and governance in Jerusalem, and reframing services for the elderly.
During his thirty-two years on the School of Social Work faculty, Lauffer was founding director of several initiatives, including the Drachler Program for Jewish Communal Leadership as well as the Continuing Education Program in the Human Services, which played significant a role in promoting developments in child welfare, community mental health, and services planning for the aging. He played a central role in creation of the Association for Community Organization and Social Administration (ACOSA). The author of more than 20 books on management and fundraising, Professor Lauffer continues as co-editor of the Sage Human Service Guides and Sourcebooks, through which more than 200 volumes have been published since 1977.
