Community Organization Learning Community

Community Organization is a program at the University of Michigan School of Social Work for people committed to social justice and community change in a diverse society.

The program develops skills to:

  • Organize groups for social action;
  • Plan programs at the local level;
  • Develop community-based services; and
  • Involve people in decisions that affect their lives

Our program - which is the oldest and largest of its kind - prepares students from diverse backgrounds, and incorporates issues related to class, race, ethnicity, gender, age, and cultural differences.

Community Organization Learning Community (COLC) is a special initiative to:

  • Prepare students for roles as change agents
  • Engage faculty members in participatory research and teaching
  • Develop long-term partnerships with community collaborators
  • Advance community organization as a field of practice and subject of study.
